Terminal-Services

Terminal Services Licencing is a pain!

After using TS for some time (the 90 / 120 day grace trial) I get knarked when you can't continue to use it. As I have a bought and and paid for XP client and another bought windows 2003 server I really fail to see why I have to get yet another licence to access the server from my client. I want to beale to forward an application to my desktop to moniter this that or the other and I don't wanna pay for it!

Well you can! Care of Yves Junqueira (Thanks). Now here come the warning about some other rouge out there I found Yves Junqueira's page from another who was trying to make money out of the trick by selling the info in a PDF. Tsk! some poeple eh?

Yves' suggests that you need to alter the reg key on the client machines, I've found that this isn't needed and the clients are still able to access the unit.

An alturnative I've seen is openssh(d) for win32. Now I use this all the time you can't beat ssh or sftp, but then I use *nix alot. I'[ve not fully tested this but a win32 client tunnelier appears to have a secure remote connection option. It looks like the app uses some form of loopback and transfers the data over ssh, weather or not the RDP licences are required I dunno???

*** UPDATE ***
Here's how to just in case the other site goes down.

Connect to the server via, VNC or the physical console.

Stop the "Terminal Service Licensing" Service. (Via "Admin Tools" -> "Services")

Then using Windows Explorer Rename / Remove the file:

"%WINDIR%\\system32\\lserver\\TSLIC.edb"

Restart the Service and you're away.

** NB :: You can do this via a Terminal Services Session, as long as you are connected to the server, and don't logout (end the session) you can re-connect and stop the Licencing Service without loosing connection.
