Howto access Usenet
This page describes howto install and use a USENET reader/downloader. Additionally, it covers howto search and locate Movies, Music and Applicatons you might be looking for.
There are places within this howto that requires you to enter the username / password combinations I gave you in person. Otherwise you'll have to get on and register and pay for your own accounts.
NewsRover - Reader/Downloader
Download the NewsRover application and walk through the installer. It's pritty simple jut fo with all the default options.
After the install has finished it will run a wizard. Fill in the forms you can use a made up name / email address if you prefer (The name/email details you enter here will never be sent to the server.) But you will have to enter the Username and Password that I give you for "USENET".
You will need to tell the programme where you want the finished downloads to be put.
That's it. You're now ready to start downloading.
Searching Via NewsRover
There's a limited search tool avaliable within NewsRover. You can either search for MP3's for Attachments. On the left side of NewsRover you'll see a treeview. If you expand the tree (by clicking the +'s) you should see the branches "MP3 Search" and "File Search". If you click either of these another window will popup.
MP3 Search - Enter a phrase, such as artist, albumn, track name and click begin search. Any matches will be listed. To download the MP3's all you have to do is double click on the Matches. If you are after an album the results should be grouped. So you can choose all the tracks for that album.
File Search - Enter a phrase and click begin search. In a very similar way to the MP3 search theresults appar below. But when you are searching for Films of applications most ae alot larger than MP3's so the attachmetshave to be devided up into multipule results.
Newsrover will try to group these mulipart messages into single results. These grouped results are prefixed with a "+". Double clicking a group will make another popup open, this will hold detals about the download, howmany files and how large the download is. If any are missing it will warn you, otherwise make sure the 2 download options are checked and click "Start downloading RAR archive now".
Download, Review, Extract
Once you've started a download, it'll download as fast as your connection will allow. And so your connection will dictate how long it'll take.
If you want to review the active downloads an the estimated compleation times, click the "Show-Queue" button in the toolbar. The "Finis Time" column will tell you when the item in the groupd will finish. If youlocate thelast ite of a group it'll indicate when it'll finish.
Once al the parts have been downloaded. They have to be combined and extracted, this is where NewsRover make life easy for you. At the end ofthe download it'll automatically Combine all the messages and then extract the RAR archive. Once this is done it'll be copied to the folder that you defined earlier.
Searching Via www.newzbins.com
I find that NewsRover's search isn't very reliable, so I use NewzBin.com. I've got logins for this too, it's a very cheep service that's well worth it. Just like anyothersearch engine you can enter a term and select th type of thing you are searching for.
The results are lists of reports, so if you search or a film you will see a list of matches. There's lots of details on these results.
Age 'n' Size - The far right has the age of the post & report an the size. The USENET subscription only hold binary data for 110 days. So you need to be aware of that when looking at the results.
Commnets, Web links - Some of the resultswill have comment, just hover over the link and they will appear. Tote left is Blue circle (a globe) its a link to the web site for the match.
Download - To download a selected result you can click on the green arrow icon. If you seelct to "Run" rather than save he file it'll automtically load the NZB into NewsRover and you can start the download.
